Web Spreaders
Wrinkles are a very common problem with paper, plastic film and
foil webs. Because webs have very little lateral compressive stiffness,
wrinkles often occur. Wrinkles are caused by a variety of factors
and there are several approaches to solving wrinkle problems (some
of which are not discussed here). Web spreading or anti wrinkle
rolls are called upon to perform a spectrum of activity from stretching
a web, to spreading a web, to allowing a web to flatten out or simply
not inducing wrinkles in the first place.
One of the most common causes of web wrinkles is poor machine alignment
or bad roll geometry. When addressing a wrinkle problem, our first
recommendation is that you verify that your rolls are cylindrical
and aligned within tolerances appropriate for your web material.
If roll alignment is not accurate, then the application of web spreading
devices is not an effective solution to the root problem. After
misalignment has been ruled out, the application of web
spreading or wrinkle removal rolls is appropriate.
