Difficult High Speed Balance Problem
Recently a custom machine builder
required an extremely high-speed rubber covered
aluminum roll. They contacted Webex after their current supplier
was unable to balance rolls at a new higher speed specification.
The problem was that the rolls would shake and rumble when they
attempted to run the rolls at speed. We quickly discovered this
was due to the fact that the current design was operating above
critical speed. Webex engineers worked closely with the customer.
By including their engineers and our balance team in the design
process, the problem was solved.
Webex was able to design a roll than ran at speed, was lighter,
and cost less than the original roll. While touring their facility
we noticed yellow safety tape on the ends of rolls. When asked about
it, we were told, "Those rolls run so well, sometimes it's
hard to tell if they are turning, so we put tape stripes on the
ends."
