A Kinder and Gentler Groove for Sensitive Films

A major producer of poly films was experiencing web drifting at high speeds. Entrapped air was lifting the web off of the idler rolls. The web was also skipping on the roll surface and damaging the film

The customer first installed standard spiral 'V' groove idler rolls from Webex. These rolls worked great in relieving entrapped air. However, the spiral groove was marking the sensitive film with a spiral pattern at given web tensions.

Webex engineers worked with the customer to develop a diamond knurl microgroove pattern. In addition to this pattern, a standard microgroove pattern was also developed. Both groove patterns possess a high concentration of very small grooves to release entrapped air while still providing the needed roll surface to gently support a sensitive web.

Microgroove rolls have since been used to increase web traction by relieving air, and to improve web release by reducing contact area. This unique roll surface has also been applied to reverse taper idler rolls to improve wrinkle removal.
